The Political Scene

Middle East peace talks in Washington have been adjourned for 10 days, withthe parties to the negotiations stressing their commitment to the continuingprocess. Israel has spoken of a breakthrough in relations with its old enemySyria. The Syrians, meanwhile, have encountered new problems in Lebanon, withthe Beirut government receiving setbacks in the general elections - which havealso seen further gains for Islamic fundamentalists.
