US Frigate Damaged by Mine
In the first incident of its kind in the Gulf shipping war, the 3,740-ton USfrigate Samuel Roberts hit a mine on 14 April in the central Gulf some 70 mileseast of Bahrain. The explosion damaged the ship's hull and caused flooding inits engine room, as well as injuring at least ten members of the crew. Thefrigate subsequently headed for Bahrain under emergency power.
