The Middle East Situation

Iraq has proved that its victories at Fao and Shalamcheh were no flukes byrepelling an Iranian counterattack at Shalamcheh and recapturing the Majnoon oilfields, thus clearing the Iranians out of the last Iraqi territory they held inthe south. The reasons for Iran's continued poor performance in the field arenot clear, but the war has entered a new phase which presents problems forboth sides.
