The Middle East Situation
Iran and Iraq finally managed to agree (through UN Secretary General Perez deCuellar) on a cease-fire, which will go into effect on 20 August. Five dayslater the two sides will meet face-to-face in Geneva for negotiations onimplementing the rest of Security Council Resolution 598, and the first item onthe agenda - the withdrawal of forces - could well provide an indication ofwhether smooth or heavy going lies ahead.
