Baker Confirms 30 June Deadline for US Oil Companies in Libya

US oil companies operating in Libya will have to leave by 30 June, according to US Treasury Secretary James A. Baker, who told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on 20 May that "the deadline will not be extended." Mr. Baker's statement puts an end to any hopes the companies may have entertained that some kind of compromise with the US Government might be reached on the question of withdrawal.
