The Middle East Situation
The Mubarak-Peres summit in Alexandria has clearly opened the door to a warming of the climate between Egypt and Israel. Whether it heralds any real progress towards a comprehensive regional peace settlement remains to be seen. It was held despite the fallout from two major terrorist actions, the hijacking of an American airliner at Karachi airport, and the massacre at the Istanbul synagogue.
