In Syria the authorities have decided to respond to protests with repression rather than reform. The two main Palestinian parties, secular Fatah and Islamist Hamas, have sprung a surprise by resolving their differences, much to the annoyance of the Israelis. In Yemen pro and anti-government forces have accepted a GCC proposal to end their standoff.
