Senate Defeats Proposal To RaiseCAFE Standards

The US Senate on 13March rejected by a vote of 62-38 a proposal put forward by Senators John Kerry(D-MA) and John McCain (R-AZ) that would have increased automobile fuel economystandards. The proposed legislation called for the Corporate Average FuelEconomy (CAFE) standards of passenger cars and light trucks to be raised from24mpg at present to 36mpg by 2015.
