The Political Scene
The Syrians have decided not to resume high-level quasi-direct talks with the Israelis, and instead the two sides will send teams of experts to Washington to discuss separately the document tabled by the Americans in Shepherdstown. The UN Secretary-Generals nomination of Rolf Ekeus to head the UNs new disarmament body UNMOVIC has provoked the sharpest clash yet in the Security Council over Iraq.
