The Political Scene
The presence of Syrian President Hafiz al-Asad and highranking delegations from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait at the funeral of King Husainof Jordan was generally taken to mean that Jordans new King ' Abd Allah isstarting his reign with a clean slate in regional terms. Bahrain has joinedother Gulf states in criticizing American plans for a change of government inBaghdad and even Britain appears to be distancing itself from the idea.
