The Political Scene
Israel Prime Minister Shimon Peres has floated the idea of holding a referendum on any final status agreement with the Palestinians, a suggestion that is not without its dangers for the peace process. He has also visited Oman and Qatar, presumably with a view to improving his chances in the forthcoming Israeli elections. A visit to Tehran by a European delegation does not seem to have done much to change the Iranians' minds about either...
