US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton believes Iran is moving in the direction of a military dictatorship, while the US military commander in Iraq sees Tehran's hand behind the body which has disqualified a large number of candidates in next month's elections. The US has nominated a new ambassador to Syria and sent a senior official to Damascus for talks with President Bashar al-Asad.
