The Muslim Brotherhood candidate, Muhammad Mursi, has won Egypt's first post-Mubarak presidential election, and has lost little time in opening negotiations with the country's ruling military council. In Syria, UN/Arab League mediator Kofi Annan is trying to organize an international action group to discuss a transition. Syrian-Turkish relations have hit a new low after the Syrians shot down a Turkish fighter.
