ICJ Begins Hearings on Libya-Malta Continental Shelf Dispute
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will open public hearings on 26 November on the case submitted to it in July 1982 by Libya and Malta regarding oil drilling rights in the continental shelf. Malta is asking that the approximately 200 miles of sea separating the two countries be divided equally for the purposes of oil exploration, while Libya claims a larger share because of its long and irregular coastline.
